Other Devices
There are many pointing devices that help to prevent Repetitive
Strain Injuries. One of these devices is the Smart-Nav. This is
a mouse that uses the movements of your head to track the pointer
on the screen. This mouse has an infra-red camera that tracks the
movement of your head and reflects it back to the computer. The
reflections are tracked by a small dot that you can place on any
object: a hat, a phone headset, or even your forehead. This leaves
your hands free to type and greatly increases your efficiency on
the computer.
Another pointing device that you can use to eliminate the mouse
is a touch screen. The touch screen is a monitor that allows you
to use your finger, glove, or a stylus pointer to move the pointer
on the monitor just by touching it. This eliminates the constant
need to use your hand and fingers on the mouse.
These screens can be purchased as separate add-ons to laptops,
flat screens, or regular monitors. You can also purchase a new monitor
with the hardware already added in. If you want, you can also continue
to use your mouse, but you won’t have to use it all the time.
You can clean the screen using regular soft cloths with Windex,
etc.
One of the best devices to replace the mouse is the pointing device
that is shaped like a pen. After several years of study, they have
found that the ergonomic style of a mouse pen relieves the unnatural
pressure put on the arm, forearm, and thumb. This mouse pen is especially
good for those who are graphic illustrators as it imitates a regular
pen allowing more freedom to create. The mouse pen also has an eraser
that is similar to a regular eraser on a pencil, again allowing
the artist to create more exact lines. For many, this mouse is superior
to any other mouse device.
You can also continue to use a mouse, but ones that are created
to put your hands in different positions. Some mouse devices put
your hands in a vertical position as if you were shaking hands with
someone. The mouse looks similar to a game controller with a stick
standing upright and the buttons on the top of the stick. This mouse
works perfectly with regular office procedures such as data entry,
word processing, and spreadsheets. If you need to make movements
with smaller circles, such as doing artistic photo work or drawing,
it is more difficult. But, in general, it is a good option to relieve
the use of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Another type of mouse that you can use is an ergonomic mouse that
is shaped correctly for the size of your hand. Certain types of
mouse devices now come in different sizes, because hands come in
different sizes. These ergonomic mice are also contoured to fit
your hand correctly and provide a more relaxed and secure grip.
You can also control the pointer on the screen by rolling a dial
on the side of the mouse or by moving the mouse around in the traditional
manner. These models are not much more expensive than a traditional
mouse and will help to prevent Repetitive Strain Injuries much better.
To find other pointing devices to help you either alleviate and
heal the pain from RSI or to prevent injuries, research the above
terms specifically or look for “ergonomic office devices.”
This term should help you find the office equipment you need to
make your office more ergonomically correct.
