Staplers
Frequent
use of a stapler can cause RSI, repetitive strain injury, to your
wrist and arm. The force of pushing down a stapler onto a stack
of paper requires a good deal of strength, and if you are doing
this repeatedly you can do some major damage to your wrist and arm.
An electric stapler may be a good alternative to the standard stapler
to help reduce the occurrence of RSI. Listed below are the pros
and cons of electric staplers. Read through them to help you decide
if “going electric” is the best alternative for you:
Pros
-
With an electric stapler, there are brands with both battery
and AC power. So finding an outlet isn’t your main concern
when you have the choice to use batteries.
-
An electric stapler is smaller and a bit more compact than
a standard stapler, so the amount of space used is minimal.
-
The amount of RSI is reduced as you will not have to push
down on the stapler at all. It automatically staples when you
position the paper under it.
-
Since it is small, compact, and can use batteries, it is portable.
-
An electric stapler can staple more pages than you yourself
could, with force, on a standard stapler; the most is about
10 pages. And most importantly, you won’t hurt yourself.
-
It can be faster and more efficient, just slip in the pages
with one hand, while the other hand can be doing something else.
Cons
-
Like all staplers, an electric stapler can get jammed and might
be a bit harder to fix than a standard stapler.
-
If you decide to plug in the electric stapler, the cord can
be a tripping hazard and cause injury.
-
Because it has a cord, there is the possibility of the cord
getting tangle around other things in the office, providing
more work and hassle for you to deal with.
-
An electric stapler is more expensive than a standard stapler.
-
Some brands may be temperamental. The paper needs to be exactly
positioned in the stapler to get the stapler to staple.
Depending on your needs, an electric stapler could be beneficial
to you. If you are worried about RSI, then it is probably a good
idea to invest in one to save yourself from future pain or injury.
