Gloves
People
who type should at least consider wearing gloves or braces specially
designed to support, massage, and warm the wrist and hand. These
gloves promote good circulation and proper wrist alignment. However,
if a person already has a typing injury, it is very important that
he or she checks with a medical specialist, first, before using
and wearing any typing gloves.
There is a debate about whether typing gloves help or hinder a
person with typing injuries. Part of this debate can be broken down
into when the person wears the gloves. Some say that the gloves
should be worn during the day, while the person is typing and performing
other activities that could cause strain on the wrist. Some say
they should only be worn at night, while the person is resting or
sleeping.
Wear only at night?
Both persons who already have or who are trying to prevent getting
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) or Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)
can benefit from wearing gloves. However, keep in mind that CTS
and RSI in the wrist are caused by a muscle imbalance in the wrist
and fingers. Wearing a glove while typing may only increase this
imbalance and therefore worsen the condition.
Wear while typing?
Many gloves are designed to provide wrist protection for a person
using a computer keyboard and mouse. These gloves are meant to prevent
pain by keeping the user’s hands and wrists in good posture.
Many are meant to be use in lieu of a wrist pad. Most wearers find
that the typing gloves allow them to type for longer periods of
time, without feeling the pain and strain that would normally befall
them – the gloves keep their hands in a position proper for
typing, thereby lessening the strain that typing can have on the
wrists.
Again, if you already have a typing injury, it is very important
to first talk with a medical specialist before purchasing and wearing
typing gloves or braces. Also, keep in mind that some gloves are
meant more specifically for prevention while others are meant to
aid in the relief of inflammation, swelling, and pain associated
with an already-present RSI.
